Some attendees spent the day considering patient safety, automated coding, and collective bargaining. Others braved the humidity and the 90º-plus temperatures to stroll the Bermuda grass at the Potomac Ridge Golf Course for the 11th annual AHRA Golf Classic. But at 6:30 pm, all gathered at the President’s Reception, sponsored by Agfa Healthcare, to greet old friends and make new ones.

Debra Lopez, CRA

Debra Lopez, CRA, outgoing president of the AHRA, calls her year in office a labor of love, and reminisced about her first AHRA meeting more than 20 years ago, coincidentally also held in Washington, DC. Back then, she was brand new to the job and knew no one. This year the association made a concerted effort to bring some of the past leaders back to the meeting, people like Howard Schwartz, who wrote a textbook series in Radiology Management on the basics of hospital department management that Lopez found invaluable. Today, new managers have a Basic Management Skills track that runs the length of the meeting, with sessions on asset management, negotiating service contracts, effective communication, and policies and procedures.

“They get to know each other, too,” says Lopez. “They become friends.”

Roland and Sandy Rhynus

Standing nearby, Roland Rhynus, CRA, the organization's incoming president shared the story behind the kukui nut bead necklace he wore, a gift of gratitude from member Ben Tuua, who never fails to bring a lei when he attends the meeting. After he lost a patient to breast cancer, Tuua turned to the AHRA for help in setting up a breast cancer-screening program on the island of Samoa.

That’s what friends—and membership in the AHRA—are for.
