The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has announced the creation of a new dual primary certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR). The certificate acknowledges the significance and complexity of interventional methods in diagnostic radiology. IR/DR certification will be offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) to physicians who have demonstrated competency in interventional procedures, as well as sound clinical judgment and skill in peri-procedural care of patients undergoing interventional procedure. The newly added IR/DR certification brings the number of specialty and subspecialty certificates offered by the ABMS’ 24 Member Boards to 160. Nearly 800,000 physicians are Board Certified by an ABMS Member Board(s). An article from the Radiology Business Journal goes into this process in more detail.
