Auto Union Reduces Imaging Use

The United Auto Workers say a new benefit management plan has reduced imaging use by as much as 12%.

The UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust relies on several companies such as CareCore National to manage benefits in Indiana and Ohio.

The union is also using American Imaging Management for trust members in Michigan, according to an article in Crain’s Detroit Business.

CareCore is designed to offer web-based prior authorization to reduce inappropriate imaging. According to initial estimates, CareCore reduced radiology use by 10% to 12%. In 2009, as much as 28% of medical images under the union retirement plan was inappropriate, according to a consultant in the article.
