Cyber security experts are warning small practices of the vulnerabilities in their electronic record systems in a report by Kroll’s Cyber Security and Information Assurance.
The report states small practices are often more susceptible than larger ones because they don’t have the most sophisticated technology and therefore represent a path of least resistance. They also often don’t perform upgrades and are generally more lax on routine maintenance, based on an article in American Medical News.
Tips to improve security include having an active system response plan and a document retention policy. A response team would coordinate what to do in case a security breach occurred. A document retention policy would reduce how much information practices keep on file. Even if it’s easy to store, this can lead to security issues, experts warn.
