Health care continues to grow with the addition of 45,000 jobs in December, according to the latest report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Last year, only 23,000 jobs were added in the same month. Total health care employment rose by 338,000 in 2012, an increase over 315,000 in 2011.
Ambulatory health care services saw the biggest increase with 23,000, while hospitals followed with 12,000. Nursing and residential care facilities grew by 3,700.
Non-farm payroll employment increased by 155,000, and the unemployment rate held at 7.8%. Overall, employment growth averaged 153,000 per month, the same rate as in 2011.
