Review Finds PET Accurate in Detecting Dementia

Over a decade of research demonstrates that PET scans are a safe and accurate way to detect early onset dementia and Alzheimer disease.

A review of the literature in the current issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine says PET combined with the biomarker 18F-FDG can detect areas of metabolic decline indicating dementia. Up until 2000, this method was largely unproven.

There is currently no single reliable test for dementia and Alzheimer disease so an effective way to spot the condition early with PET scans holds tremendous promise to improve treatment.
